Samsung previously promised to provide only two major OS upgrades for its Android smartphones. It meant that two years was as long as the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ were supported. It came with Android 8.0 out of the box and has since received its Android 9.0 and Android 10 updates.

It is sad but true that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will not receive another significant Android OS upgrade.

However, Samsung can bring additional features to the devices through its new One UI updates, which is a software overlay. Samsung launched One UI in 2018 for its users using Android Pie and higher. Samsung already launched an upgraded One UI in August this year and will surely do so in the coming months.

No Android upgrades for Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

Samsung announced last month that it’s going to support select devices for three Android OS upgrades. The eligible devices don’t include Galaxy S models released before the Galaxy S10. All previous models are not suitable.

So this leaves the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ out of luck. It did take everyone by surprise when it announced that One UI 2.1 would be released for these handsets. Samsung eventually released One UI 2.1 for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ three months ago. The new update brought features like Music Share, Quick Share, Single Take, the new camera zoom interface, and more.

One UI is Samsung’s custom skin, and it’s not beholden to Android. Even though these devices won’t get another significant Android OS upgrade, Samsung is free to release another One UI update if it deems fit. The company might be thinking about that.

Samsung revealed the list of devices that will receive One UI 2.5 last month, including both of these handsets. Remember, this iteration of One UI was introduced with the Galaxy Note 20 series. It will be awe-inspiring if Samsung releases the update for the 2018 flagships. The company hasn’t confirmed precisely when it’s going to send out this update.

As for how long the Galaxy S9 be supported, new Android upgrades are out of the question, and One UI 2.5 might be the last update of its kind for these devices. Samsung will continue to provide security updates for another year. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are currently on the monthly cycle for security updates. They will eventually be demoted to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ quarterly cycle before software support completely dries up.
